Dr. Ziya Arnavut, professor of Computer and Information Sciences at SUNY Fredonia, chaired the 10th High-capacity Networks and Emerging/Enabling Technologies Conference, held Dec. 11-13 in Famagusta, Cyprus.
The conference was organized by Eastern Mediterranean University from Cyprus and University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) from USA, and technically sponsored by the Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest professional association for advancement of technology.
More than 108 papers were submitted to the conference from several different countries, of which 60 were accepted for publication and will appear in the IEEE Xplore digital library. Basar Koc, a Fredonia alumnus currently working toward his Ph.D. at the University of Miami, co-authored a paper with Dr. Arnavut.
In addition, Dr. Junaid Zubairi, a fellow Computer and Information Sciences professor at SUNY Fredonia, presented a paper on "Securing SCADA Systems with Open Source Software." Dr. Zubairi is a member of the founding team of HONET and has participated in it since its inception in 2004. This year, he was the workshop coordinator for HONET.
The conference had seven invited speakers on optical networks and several emerging technology topics. Prof. Ian Ferguson (UNCC, USA), Prof. Harry Perros (UNCC, USA), Prof. Aba Ebong (UNCC, USA), Mr. Richard Jones (FIFTH Council, UK), Mr. Steven Woodward (Cloud Perspectives, Canada), Dr. Zafar Iqbal (COMSAT, Pakistan) and Dr. Manshad Satti (IT-Butler E-services, United Arab Emirates) were the invited speakers.
Arnavut is originally from Cyprus and moved to the U.S. in 1984. He is currently in his 17th year as a faculty member at SUNY Fredonia. He is also the president of the United University Professions (UUP) Fredonia Chapter. Next year, the HONET conference will be hosted by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC).
