A science fair encompassing biology, chemistry and geology will be held at the Fredonia Science Center on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Demonstrations conducted by chemistry students, touch-and-feel exhibits presented by the Department of Biology and interactive experiments will highlight the event organized by the Chemistry Club.

The fair, to be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the third floor of the science center, is free and open to students, faculty, prospective students attending the campus fall open house and community members.

“This is a great opportunity for anyone, no matter their science background, to experience STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) on the Fredonia campus! All ages are welcome to come enjoy science with no expectations other than to have fun,” said Annemarie Harrigan, Chemistry Club president.

Department of Geology and Environmental Science Associate Professor Thomas Hegna will display fossils and other geology specimens in the touch-and-feel section. Electromyography (EMG) and electrocardiograms (EKG) will be conducted by Department of Biology Associate Professor Todd Backes, who will also address other health-related topics.

Demonstrations encompass elephant toothpaste, gummy bear torture, a disappearing beaker and a carbon sugar snake. Interactive experiments will include slime-making, snowmaking and candy DNA (making an edible DNA model with Twizzlers candy and gummy bears).

The Chemistry Club is “passionate as a club about promoting the STEM programs on campus,” said Ms. Harrigan, a senior Biochemistry major from Springville, NY.
