The Fredonia State softball team earned a series split against Plattsburgh and a sweep against Potsdam over the weekend to improve to 8-12 overall and 3-3 in the SUNYAC. The Devils lost 1-3 in game one against Plattsburgh, before a 7-4 victory in the second game on Saturday. On Sunday the Devils defeated Potsdam 7-2 in game one and earned a 9-5 victory in game two.

Game 1 vs. Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh posted three runs in the top of the fourth and Morgan Ormerod tossed a complete game to lead the Cardinals to a 3-1 victory in game one.

After three scoreless frames, the Cardinals started to take control of the game in the fourth inning. Julia Golino singled to start the inning and after back to back errors, Plattsburgh scored the first run of the game. Michelle DeFina had a RBI single and the Cardinals scored another run to close out the inning up 3-0.

Fredonia State got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning with a RBI single from Erin Cunningham but the Cardinals held on to secure the 3-1 victory.

Morgan Ormerod earned the victory in the circle to improve to 3-3. She scattered two hits and allowed only one run over seven innings while striking out six. Fredonia State starter Emily Chelius absorbed the loss for the Devils and dropped to 2-3. She gave up three runs and had nine strike outs.  

Game 2 vs. Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh got out in front early, scoring the games first two runs in the top of the second as Claire Palmer tripled to bring home Michelle DeFina and Emma Deo. Fredonia State scored four runs in the bottom of the second to go up by two, one inning later Maddison Lowe doubled with two runners on to push the score to  6-3 over the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh scored one run in the fourth but the Devils shut the door on the Cardinals scoring another run in the bottom of the fifth and went on to win 7-4.

Fredonia State offensively was paced by  Maddison Lowe who finished the game going 2-3 with four RBIs and one run. Allie Wandell chipped in 2 RBIs going 3-4 at the plate. Pitcher Vanessa Galbraith pitched a complete game going seven innings scattering five hits and surrendering four runs with six strikeouts to improve to 3-4 on the season.

Game 1 vs. Potsdam

The Devils bats got going in game one of the doubleheader as Maddison Lowe doubled to bring home Kayla Jo Lynn to tie the game at 1-1. Back to back singles from Allie Wandell and Alyssa Santiago brought in three more runs for the Devils to push their lead to three. Fredonia State capitalized off of a Potsdam error to add another run to head into the fourth inning up 5-1.

After a Bears run in the top of the fourth, Madison Devore drove in two more runs for Fredonia State, blasting a two run home run in the fourth to put the Devils ahead 7-2. Fredonia State would shut Potsdam out in the next three innings to take the game. 

Emily Chelius, got the nod in game one and pitched 7.0 innings, striking out nine batters while allowing two runs on five hits hits.

Game 2 vs. Potsdam

In game two, after the Bears scored the first run of the game the Devils scored five runs in the first, three runs in the second and one in the fifth as they went for the 9-5 win.

Madison Lowe struck out 11 batters en route to her first victory of the season and she added a RBI triple as well. In the fifth inning, Potsdam scored four runs with Kaylee LaForest lacing a double to drive in three runs and the Bears added on another run off a Kat Tompkins single to bring in LaForest but the Devils maintained a comfortable lead and eventually won the game.

Alaina Hogue recorded two hits, including a home run and a double with four RBIs, while Alyssa Santiago was 3-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Allie Wandell recorded two hits in the win as well.

Fredonia State had 12 hits in the game and registered one error in the victory.

The Devils are back in action Tuesday, April 16, for a home non-conference doubleheader against St. John Fisher scheduled for 3 p.m.
