After playing a number of Top 20 programs on its annual Spring Trip, the Fredonia State softball team came back north ready for conference action. They would bring the lumber to the yard, scoring 29 times in a sweep of Morrisville. They took the opener 10-0 behind the two-hit pitching of Kendall Phillips, and took the nightcap, 19-11.
Head Coach Tony Ciccarello also notched his 400th career win with the sweep. Ciccarello had stints at Geneseo and New Paltz before settling in as the current Blue Devil boss.
Game 1
Phillips allowed two hits in six innings of work in spinning the shutout. She was backed by the 10-hit attack from the Blue Devil bats. Avery Hill and Madison Lowe homered. Hill would finish with five RBI and three hits, and Lowe would have a pair of hits with two RBI.
Game 2
Morrisville bounced back with a pair of first-inning runs in Game 2 off starting pitcher Vanessa Galbraith. Not to be outdone, the Devils exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the first.
The scoring would continue for both teams, combining for 30 runs.
Allie Wandell and Arianne LeRouzes both had three hits apiece. Wandell drove in five runs including a homerun, and LeRouzes drove in three. Lowe, Hill, Kayla Jo Lynn, and Madison Devore each had two hits apiece.
Lowe would earn the pitching victory in relief after Galbraith lasted one-plus innings. Lowe pitched three innings and gave up two runs. Fredonia State improves to 4-10 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC.
Morrisville now stands at 5-7 and 0-2 in the conference.
The Devils' home doubleheader vs. Cortland on Saturday was postponed due to the wet forecast. Next up for the Blue Devils is a home doubleheader vs. the University of Rochester on Tuesday, April 8.
