The Fredonia Alumni Golf Tournament, which raises money each year to support student scholarships and was to be held on July 17 at Shorewood Country Club, has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision, reached collaboratively by university leadership, the Fredonia College Foundation, Fredonia Alumni Association and Fredonia University Police Department, was difficult to make, according to Betty Gossett, executive director of the foundation.

“In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are thinking of the safety of our participants, volunteers and staff. We are also conscious of the economic impact being felt by our dedicated sponsors, small businesses owners, and alumni,” Ms. Gossett said.

Proceeds from the tournament, which has raised more than $200,000 in the last 11 years, help to fund a University Police scholarship and Alumni Association legacy scholarships through the Fredonia College Foundation.

While this year’s tournament will not be held, students at Fredonia still have significant needs especially during this unprecedented time, Gossett said.

“If you had originally planned on participating this year, we hope that you will consider generously donating your registration fees, or making a contribution if you are able, to the Fredonia Student Emergency Relief Fund by visiting www.fredonia.edu/give,” Gossett said. To make a gift, go online, or send a gift to the address to the Fredonia College Foundation at 272 Central Ave., Fredonia, NY 14063.

The fund was established to financially assist students who face unexpected expenses related to the shift to a digital education format. Due to a generous donation, the SUNY Impact Foundation will match dollar for dollar any gift made to our campus relief fund by July 1, 2020 up to a total of $50,000.

Plans are being developed for the return of the tournament in 2021. Information on next year’s tournament is available online.
