The Department of Environmental Health and Safety would like to remind students, faculty, staff and visitors to stay safe while walking and driving around Fredonia. While certainly applicable during difficult winter weather conditions for drivers, these general safety tips are good to remember year-round.
For pedestrians:
- Please utilize crosswalks and sidewalks both on campus and in town. Remember when you cross the street where there are not designated crosswalks or intersection, vehicles have the right-of-way.
- Be attentive while crossing the street; don’t talk or text on your cell phone.
- When jogging, use reflective and or bright clothing, do well to respect on coming traffic.
- Make eye contact with on coming drivers, look across all lanes whenever you are crossing or approaching streets/crosswalks. Do not assume drivers will see you.
- Be patient, do not attempt to cross until traffic is clear or all oncoming vehicles have acknowledged your presence.
- Wave and thank drivers who yield.
- In regard to late hours and weekend nights, if walking, walk in large groups of 2 – 4 people or more.
- Do not walk alone.
- Plan and schedule late night or weekend night events and activities according to the Escort Bus Service Hours: Monday - Thursday 8pm – 3:30am and Friday – Sunday 6pm -3:30am. If a ride is needed one can call 716-673- 4999, this is a direct number to escort bus drivers.
- Take note of Emergency Blue Phones. These can be identified by their bright blue lighting. There are 20 Blue Phones situated throughout campus, either indoor or outdoor. Visit www.fredonia.edu/about/offices/university-police/bluelight for a detailed map of all Blue Phone locations.
For drivers:
- Be conscious and obedient of campus speed limits; drive slowly when entering crosswalks and be prepared to stop.
- Use extreme caution when backing out of your parking spot; check all mirrors and blind spots before exiting.
- Campus vehicles and carts allowed to drive on the sidewalk must do so at slow speeds and yield to all pedestrians.
- Yield to pedestrians crossing in marked crosswalks or at intersections, do not creep up in a vehicle, come to a full stop and wait until the crosswalk or intersection is clear of pedestrians.
- Do not pass vehicles stopped for pedestrians on your side of the road.
- Establish eye contact with pedestrians and be patient.
- Do not text, apply make up, shave, read books or make phone calls. These and other activities not associated with driving your vehicle are distractions and will impede your reaction time to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
Stay safe!
