Three guest artists will conduct several events that include masterclasses and competitions at SUNY Fredonia’s annual Day of Percussion on Sunday, Oct. 31.

The day-long program in Mason Hall, which begins with registration at 8 a.m., is designed for student musicians of all ages as well as music educators and community members interested in jazz performance.

Room 1080 will host master classes by Jared Byer, a health professional at Drummer’s Rx, a health and wellness program, at 9 a.m., and by Tom Foote, a snare instructor/cymbal craftsman, on Scottish pipe and rudimental drumming, at 10 a.m.

Jazz drummer Sherrie Maricle, the program’s featured performing artist, will lead a drum set master class at 11 a.m., also in Room 1080. Ms. Maricle is the recipient of numerous awards for her outstanding drum set performance and musical artistry, including a Kennedy Center Mary Lou Williams Lifetime Achievement Award and an Ovation award, among others.

Maricle’s drum set experiences run the gamut from her leadership of the all-female big band DIVA, to her quintet FIVE PLAY, to her trio 3D jazz trio.

Afternoon sessions in Rosch Recital Hall begin at 1 p.m. with Maricle on drum set, with one of Fredonia's curricular jazz combos, directed by jazz faculty member Elliot Scozarro. Immediately following the concert will be an additional master class presented by Mr. Foote, followed by the annual drum set competition. There is an additional $5 registration fee to enter the competition.

Drum set competition is open to those in all three student academic categories and is judged accordingly: elementary/middle school, high school and collegiate.

Registration for the Day of Percussion begins at 8 a.m. and includes a $5 fee. Percussion Day is hosted by the Student Association Percussion Guild, the School of Music and the Percussion Area.
