Dr. Bulent Atalay, professor of physics at the University of Mary Washington and author of the book, “Math and the Mona Lisa,” will give a general lecture on Monday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in McEwen Hall Room 209 at SUNY Fredonia.
The event is free and the public is invited to attend.
Dr. Atalay is a theoretical nuclear physicist as well as an artist. His book, “Math and the Mona Lisa,” deals with how certain mathematical properties and numbers reveal themselves in art and nature.
A physics professor for more than 30 years and a member of the American Physical Society, Dr. Atalay is an expert on several topics of modern physics, including alternate sources of energy. He is also extremely knowledgeable in high technology techniques as they apply to archeology and is a frequent lecturer at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physics, mathematics and philosophy; a master’s degree in nuclear physics and doctoral degree in theoretical physics, all from Georgetown University. Dr. Atalay received Mary Washington’s Grellet C. Simpson Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 1998.
The lecture is sponsored by the departments of Physics, Mathematical Sciences, Visual Arts and New Media, and the office of the Dean for Natural and Social Sciences.
There will be a book signing immediately following the lecture.
