Now in its 11th year, the series offers monthly informal talks by Fredonia faculty and special guests from the local and regional community. Each 25-minute presentation is followed by a brief discussion and light refreshments. Talks, which are free and open to all campus and community members, are held in S204 Williams Center and run from noon to 1 pm on the first Wednesday of each month.
The road map for the initial adventure on the information highway, “Communication in the Sciences,” will be delivered on Wednesday, Oct. 5, with Nicholas Quintyne, associate professor, Biology; Michael Dunham, assistant professor, Physics, in the driver’s seat.
Clearing the road with opening remarks will be Scott Medler, assistant professor, Biology.
Dr. Quintyne will spotlight ways in which science is communicated outside of academia and research, how sensationalism can distort scientific progress and how this disconnect can be addressed. Dr. Dunham will share his thoughts on the role of general education within natural science courses. He will also highlight how the value of these courses can be communicated to students and how best to use them to address some of today’s pressing issues.
This year's series is organized by faculty members Eliran Avni, Music; Dr. Jack Croxton, Psychology; Dr. Dunham, Physics; Dr.Medler, Biology; Roslin Smith, Communication; and Dr. Ivani Vassoler-Froelich, Politics and International Affairs. The series ackncowledges the support of the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences J. Andy Karafa and the Faculty Student Association for refreshment funds.
