SUNY Fredonia welcomes the Buffalo Chamber Players as they perform a new work, Sex & Politics, composed by Dr. Robert Deemer, the chair of the Composition Department at the SUNY Fredonia School of Music. The performance will be held Friday, March 25, at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall, and will feature special guest Tony Arnold, a Grammy-nominated soprano. The event is free and open to the public.
Sex & Politics is Dr. Deemer’s first work written for the Players after his recent appointment as composer-in-residence. It is scored for voice and a nine-piece ensemble of strings, woodwinds and brass. The piece comprises settings of six poems by the American poet E. E. Cummings.
“Neither sex nor politics are subjects that are often explored overtly in abstract concert music,” Deemer explained, “but in conjunction with Cummings’ texts, it’s possible to see the humor and pain inherent in these everyday ideas. It might be a risky subject matter, but what’s life without a little risk?”
The performance will also include Maurice Ravel’s “Sonata for violin and cello,” Alexandre Tansman’s “Septet for winds and strings,” and Charles Koechlin’s “Trio for flute, clarinet and bassoon.”
The Buffalo Chamber Players, formed in 2007 by Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra violinist Janz Castelo, are a critically acclaimed ensemble presenting innovative chamber music programs performed by the region’s finest musicians. The Players’ mission is to challenge and redefine the public’s perception of chamber music and to promote the city of Buffalo as an inspiring place to live, work and play.
The concert will also be performed in Buffalo at Buffalo Seminary, 205 Bidwell Parkway on Wednesday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m. There is a small fee for this event: $15 for the general public and $5 for students. Tickets are available at the door or www.buffalochamberplayers.org.
