This past summer, the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work and Criminal Justice was able to offer a study abroad program in Vienna, Austria, for the first time entitled, “Law, Crime and Punishment in Austria.”
Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Daniela Peterka-Benton led the program, which was open to all interested students.
During their 10-day stay in Austria, students got the chance to learn about Austria’s legal history, which included a thought provoking tour of Mauthausen Concentration Camp and a chilling glimpse at Austria’s most famous crime cases at the Austrian Crime Museum.
Students also got the chance to visit international agencies and organizations dealing with crime including a tour of the United Nations building and the chance to sit in on a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's (OSCE) Forum for Security Cooperation.
The group met with federal law enforcement agents from FBI, DHS, DEA and Diplomatic Security at the U.S. Embassy in Vienna and had the very special opportunity to talk to the Head of the Austrian Federal Central Service for Combating Human Smuggling and Trafficking.
