The Dorian Wind Quintet will visit SUNY Fredonia and offer a Master Class on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 2 until 4:30 p.m. in Diers Recital Hall in Mason Hall.

 SUNY Fredonia woodwind students will be performing for the group and then receive feedback and coaching. The class is free and the public is invited to attend.

The Dorian Wind Quintet, which has been recognized internationally for its uniquely polished and passionate performances, was formed at Tanglewood in 1961. Current members include flutist Gretchen Pusch, oboist Gerald Reuter, clarinetist Jerry Kirkbride, bassoonist John Hunt, and Karl Kramer-Johansen, horn.

Its repertoire has ranged from Baroque to Pulitzer Prize-winning commissions in the world’s most renowned concert halls. The quintet has toured Europe 18 times, and played in the Middle East, India, Africa and Asia.

It has appeared at internationally at festivals including the Stravinsky Festival at Lincoln Center, the International Festival in Warsaw, Poland; the Caramoor International Music Festival, the Newberry Spring Festival in Great Britain, the Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada; the San Luis Obispo Festival, and the New American Music festival in Sacramento, Calif.

 The group made history in 1981 as the first wind quintet to appear at Carnegie Hall, and is currently an ensemble-in-residence at Hunter College in New York City.

The wind quintet’s appearance is being coordinated by Dr. Sarah Hamilton of the School of Music.
