Four panelists will discuss the educational value of giving college students opportunities to engage in their communities during a special event April 29 at 2 p.m. in the Williams Center's Horizon Room.
"Engaging in Our Community: Opportunities and Options" will bring together students, faculty, professional staff, community partners and interested participants in a shared discussion of experiences and opportunities available with volunteering, service learning, community based research and internships.
The event is moderated by Dr. David Rankin, Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the FACE Center, with introductions by Joyce Harvard Smith, Coordinator of Volunteer and Community Services.
Panelists are Ann Deakin, Associate Professor, Geosciences; Emily VanDette, Assistant Professor, English & Service Learning Coordinator, FACE Center; Martha Diaz, AmeriCorps VISTA Member, Office of Volunteer & Community Services; and Tracy Collingwood, Interim Director, Career Development Office.
"A primary objective of the Engaging in Our Community series is to identify and build college and community partnerships, provide a variety of opportunities for students, enhance cultural and economic connections, foster civic responsibility and engagement," Ms. Smith said. "Volunteering, interning, and service learning as well as community based research allows students to contribute to the community while gaining firsthand experience, skills and knowledge in a variety of ways. This endeavor also recognizes accomplishments and progress by students, faculty, professional staff and community partners while raising awareness about future options and possibilities."
This event is sponsored by the Office of Volunteer and Community Service, FACE Center and Career Development Office.
