Fredonia’s Ethos New Music Society will begin its Newsound Festival with a performance by Third Coast Percussion on Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
The group explores and expands the extraordinary sonic possibilities of the percussion repertoire, delivering exciting performances for audiences of all kinds. Formed in 2005, the group consists of David Skidmore, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin and Sean Connors. Together, the artists have developed an international reputation with concerts and recordings of inspiring energy and subtle nuances.
The musicians have become known for ground-breaking collaborations across a wide range of disciplines, including concerts and residency projects with engineers at the University of Notre Dame, architects at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, astronomers at the Adler Planetarium and more. The ensemble enhances the performances with cutting edge new media, including free iPhone and iPad apps that allow audience members to create their own musical performances and take a deeper look at the music performed.
One of the major works on the program will be “Resounding Earth,” by Chicago-based composer Augusta Read Thomas. Scored for four percussionists playing more than 500 pieces of metal from a wide variety of cultures and historical periods, the project is conceived as a cultural statement celebrating interdependence and commonality across all cultures, and a musical statement celebrating the beauty and diversity of expression inherent in bell sounds.
