Alaskan poet and essayist Eva Saulitis will visit SUNY Fredonia for a reading and signing of her book, “Leaving Resurrection,” on Tuesday, March 24, 7 p.m., at 202 McEwen Hall.

The book, published in 2008 by Red Hen Press, has been described as one woman’s love poem to the Alaskan places and people that have taken possession of her soul. “These gentle, richly perceptive, beautifully rendered stories take readers to the heart of Alaska,” said Richard Nelson, author of “The Island Within, Heart and Blood.” The book is founded on conscience, he said. “Alaskans and everyone else who cares about America’s greatest remaining wild places urgently need to read this book.”

Ms. Saulitis, a professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Alaska – Homer, has spent summers researching killer and humpback whales off Prince William Sound, Alaska, for the last 20 years.

A native of Silver Creek, N.Y., and the daughter of long-time Reed Library Director, the late John Saulitis, the author has a master of science degree in Oceanography and an MFA in Creative Writing, both from the University of Alaska - Fairbanks.

Her poems and essays have been published in numerous journals, including Crazyhorse, Prairie Schooner and Cimarron Review. She has received fellowships from the Alaska State Council of the Arts, the Island Institute and the Rasmusen Foundation.

While at SUNY Fredonia, she will conduct a craft talk on Monday, March 23, 2 p.m., at 105 Fenton Hall.
