Fredonia Place, located at 50 Howard St. in the village and known as The Jewel on the Hill, recently signed on as the corporate sponsor for the 2007-08 World Travel Series at Rockefeller Arts Center.
“We are extremely pleased to be able to support the World Travel Series at SUNY Fredonia,” said Fredonia Place Administrator and Executive Director Eileen Lash. “Our residents attend and enjoy many of the performances at the college, especially this series.”
Rockefeller Arts Center Director Jefferson Westwood said he is pleased the travel-adventure film lecture series will be associated with a high-quality operation such as Fredonia Place.
“I am very happy to welcome Fredonia Place as the corporate sponsor of the World Travel Series,” Mr. Westwood said. “Several of my good friends reside there and I have been to the property more than two dozen times for various visits, functions and meetings. The place is beautiful and the staff is always very friendly and helpful.”
The World Travel Series will feature three programs this season, beginning on Saturday, Oct. 27 with “Cruising the Orient on the QE2” by noted travel filmmaker Doug Jones. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall.
Mr. Jones captured sights from the Great Wall of China to the Sydney Harbor Bridge to Balinese dancers in Indonesia and crocodile wrestlers in Thailand during a 47-day journey through the Orient aboard the last and the greatest of the world’s luxury liners.
Other programs in the World Travel Series sponsored by Fredonia Place are:
• “Hawaii: The Pacific Paradise” by Dennis Burkhart at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, in King Concert Hall. Mr. Burkhart made five trips to the Pacific paradise in order to paint an intimate and colorful portrait of the islands that includes the towering volcanoes of Hawaii, surfing on the north shore of Oahu and the whaling towns on Maui.
• “Soul of Morocco” by Rick Ray at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, in King Concert Hall. A former Lonely Planet backpacker turned cinematographer, writer and director, Mr. Ray has produced 12 films on regions as diverse as Israel, Bali, Borneo, Lebanon, Ethiopia, Syria, Iceland, and India. Mr. Ray, a professor at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Ventura, Calif., now turns his lens to Morocco. From the imperial city of Fes to the Roman ruins of Volubilis to the small mountain villages, Mr. Ray’s lens focuses on the sites that reveal the country’s soul.
