Fredonia, N.Y. — October 8, 2008 — SUNY Fredonia faculty members and students will be hosting “Double Reed Day,” a workshop for players of double reed woodwind instruments, which includes oboes and bassoons.
The event is intended for middle and high school oboists and bassoonists from throughout the region, who are invited to spend the day working with the School of Music’s faculty and students in a supportive, encouraging atmosphere.
The full-day event will be held on Oct. 18, beginning at 9 a.m. in Rosch Recital on the SUNY Fredonia campus. Advanced registration is $15 and must be postmarked by Oct. 8. Registration at the door is $20. Download a program and registration form here .
Faculty members involved are adjunct professor of oboe Mark Dubois and Dr. Sarah Hamilton, associate professor of oboe, Laura Koepke, assistant professor of music and bassoonist, and Dr. David Rudge, director of orchestras and operas.
The event will include a master class by special guest Christopher Weait, professor emeritus of bassoon at Ohio State University, who will focus on solo performance and various techniques of playing. Master classes with SUNY Fredonia faculty will also be offered, including reed-making classes, which focus on how to adjust reeds to play more easily and successfully. There will also be coached double reed chamber music reading sessions. The event will conclude with a double reed ensemble performance, conducted by Dr. Rudge.
Professional woodwind repair technician Brenda Small will be also available for free double reed repairs and adjustments, and Gary Armstrong, of Gary Armstrong Woodwinds in Toronto, will have a booth for participants, teachers and guests to try new and used instruments available for purchase.
Parents and teachers are encouraged to attend as well, especially the final concert in Rosch Recital Hall at 4 p.m. There will also be a free performance later that day by the SUNY Fredonia College Symphony in King Concert Hall in the Rockefeller Arts Center at 8 p.m.
