Brian Grunert, a Grammy award-winning designer whose artwork has graced the albums of such artists as Ani DiFranco, Muse, and last year's Fredfest headliner, O.A.R., will come to campus this Thursday, April 22 to speak to students as part of the Department of Visual Arts & New Media's Visiting Artists Series. His talk will begin at 8:30 p.m. in 209 McEwen Hall and is free and open to the public.
Grunert, who has worked with most of the Buffalo region's most prominent marketing communication firms, including Travers Collins & Company, Crowley Webb & Associates and The Martin Group, established his own design firm, White Bicycle, in 2006. He was able to launch his own business after some very successful freelance projects with DiFranco and her independent record label, Righteous Babe Records.
Perhaps his biggest success -- or at least his most pivital -- came in 2004, when Grunert was honored by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences with a Grammy award for Best recording Package for his work on Ani DiFranco's album, "Evolve." He was nominated again in 2006 and 2007 for work on DiFranco's "Knuckle Down" and "Reprieve" albums.
In addition to his national honors, Grunert is staple at the annual awards show of the Advertising Club of Buffalo, having won dozens of Gold awards throughout his career. In 2009 he was given the Xpedx "Most Creative Use of Paper" honor for his work on O.A.R.'s "All Sides," which featured an interesting, layered, telescoping effect. grunert has won the annual Xpedx award nearly every year since its inception.
Grunert sits on the boards of the Buffalo Arts Studio, the Advertising Club of Buffalo and has contributed to various not-for-profit organizations including Music Is Art, Meals on Wheels and Friends of Night People. He resides in North Buffalo with his wife, Darcy and daughter, Hope.
