Five Years on the Cutting Edge: From Our Perspective 2003-2008 (paperback, 978-1-60477-714-7), penned by authors Robert L. Heichberger, Ph.D., and Fredonia alumnus M. Andrew Burr, contains a compilation of the authors’ most successful published newspaper columns covering a period of five years.
Most of the pieces follow a pubic policy theme, either foreign or domestic. Included, are several columns of local interest, with overarching conceptual implications which cut across cultural lines. It can be said that the brilliance of the authors’ writing style is only eclipsed by the quality and comprehensiveness of the substance. Each section is introduced with a brief thumbnail overview of that year, followed by selected columns for that period. The pieces are related to that time period and address contemporary issues of the time.
Say the co-authors, “This volume is a no-nonsense treatment of timely public policy issues furnishing relevant documentation as evidence, and [it] provides a thorough analysis based upon solid fundamental principles. As a result, it is the hope of the authors that the reader will be able to draw conclusions based upon solid, substantive, and reliable factors.”
There is a generational age difference between the two authors, but therein lies the unique strength of the two columnists. It is the bridging of this generational gap that adds vibrancy, relevance, and dynamism to the author team. Their column, from which the book was originally drawn, had a readership that grew rapidly, crossing gender, age, background, and geographical lines.
