Approximately 40 students from area high schools participated in the fourth annual computer science competition held May 14 at SUNY Fredonia by the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. The contests were: programming, spreadsheet, web design, internet scavenger hunt and quiz show.

Winners were Buffalo Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School for web design; Fredonia High School for the programming and spreadsheet competition; Silver Creek High School and Fredonia tied for the computer science quiz show; and Bishop Timon-St. Jude won the internet scavenger hunt.

Three other schools -- Fredonia, Brocton Central School and Silver Creek -- also answered questions in the internet scavenger hunt.

Winning teams in web design, programming, spreadsheet and quiz show were awarded plaques and books, as were individual winners of the internet scavenger hunt. All students answering questions in the internet scavenger hunt were awarded prizes from the SUNY Fredonia bookstore.

Every student was awarded a Fredonia State University t-shirt and packet with information about the university and its Computer and Information Sciences department. Additionally, a SUNY Fredonia clock was given to each school.

The contests were organized by computer science faculty member, Dr. Iyad Abu-Jeib, with assistance from Department Chairperson Khalid Siddiqui and Melanie Wroblewski, department secretary. Dr. Siddiqui also conducted a workshop for student advisors.

The event, which included a breakfast and lunch, concluded with an awards ceremony.
