A grand 47-day journey from Sydney to Bangkok awaits local armchair travelers as the World Travel Series at Rockefeller Arts Center opens Saturday, Oct. 27 with the film “Cruising the Orient on the QE2” by Doug Jones.
The film, which will be personally narrated by Jones, will be shown starting at 7:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall on the State University of New York at Fredonia campus. Tickets will be available at the door.
The World Travel Series is sponsored by Fredonia Place and is part of the 2007-08 Lake Shore Savings Season.
Jones, a veteran of the travel film industry, has created a production that offers a glimpse of life in one of the most exotic travel destinations in the world.
Traveling aboard the QE2 — the last and greatest of the world’s luxury liners — Jones captures the sights in 14 destinations: Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Bali, Brunei, Manila, Hong Kong, Xian, Beijing, Tokyo, Nagoya, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore and Bangkok.
Viewers will see landmarks including the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the Great Wall of China and observe Balinese dancers in Indonesia and crocodile wrestlers in Thailand. It all takes place from the gangway of the most legendary liner of all time, the QE2.
The QE2 has been around the world 30 times. She has logged more miles and carried more passengers than any ship in history. She is a true legend, the grande dame of ocean liners and the last ship of her kind on earth.
Jones has been producing travel films since 1968. Born and raised in Kansas City, Mo., he graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in radio and television broadcasting. His personal travels have taken him into nearly 70 nations around the world.
Having produced 18 feature-length travel films, Jones has appeared in virtually every important auditorium lecture series in the United States and Canada, including the National Geographic Society series at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.
He is one of the most popular speakers/filmmakers in the history of Rockefeller’s World Travel Series. This will be his ninth visit to SUNY Fredonia, dating back to 1986.
Jones’ films have been released on home video and DVD and include “The Great Canadian Train Ride” with more than one million copies sold worldwide. He operates an active stock footage business and his material is regularly seen in prime time television shows and national commercials.
