Michael Caranante, native of West Islip, N.Y., has recently committed to attending University at Buffalo’s Law School for this coming fall semester.
Caranante, a senior majoring in political science and minoring in criminal justice, applied to six law schools in the Northeast. On his journey to success, he was admitted to all six: Albany Law School; CUNY Queens; Syracuse University; Touro Law; University at Buffalo; University of Toledo College of Law.
His top choice, UB Law School, has received favorable rankings lately. Super Lawyers, a publication of Thomson Reuters, ranked UB Law the first on its top ten law schools for producing the most lawyers in the Upstate New York area in 2010. The list ranked UB ahead of Syracuse, Albany Law, Cornell, Georgetown, University of Notre Dame, Harvard and Boston College.
On campus, Caranante is a member of Delta Chi, where he has served on its executive board the past two years as secretary and treasurer. During his terms, he was awarded, the Marge Lee Outstanding “C” Award, for his work as secretary, and Achievement for Financial Management award from its national headquarters.
His first full year of the Pre-Law Advising program at SUNY Fredonia, headed by English professor Dr. David Kaplin, gave insights on applying to law school. “Typically, three to five students majoring in political science at Fredonia apply to law school, and one or two from English apply,” said Kaplin.
Dr. Kaplin also mentioned that University at Buffalo’s Law School, Syracuse University’s Law School, and Albany Law School are the most prominent law schools Fredonia students typically apply to. “In the past, students have also attended University of Toledo Law School, Ohio Northern, and Akron. Once in a while we'll hear from someone at a western law school, and occasionally from someone from the Chicago schools.”
Caranante is keeping up with the success of his sister, Christine, who is a graduate student in clarinet performance in the Fredonia School of Music. She is a member of the Fredonia Class of 2010.
