“Chopin Birthday Celebration,” a faculty recital by SUNY Fredonia cello professor Natasha Farny, will be presented by the School of Music on Monday, Nov. 8, 7:30 p.m., at Rosch Recital Hall. The recital is free and open to the public.
Accompanying Dr. Farny in the program, which will also include music by Debussy, Elliott Carter and Jacob Ter Veldhuis, will be Chicago pianist Kuang-Hao Huang.
“This cello and piano recital brings together a shortened timeline of great works for cello, spanning two decades,” Farny said. “The Chopin Sonata will close the program, in honor of his 200th anniversary. In addition, we’ll be exploring Debussy’s ground-breaking work that left an impression on Elliott Carter in 1948 and the new sounds that Dutch composer Jacob Ter Veldhuis dreamt up in Diverso il Tempo I.”
Farney has performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Greeley Symphony Orchestra, Abilene Philharmonic, Erie Chamber Orchestra and the Western New York Chamber Orchestra, and has given sonata recitals in venues across the American Midwest and Mideast and participated in numerous music festivals around the world.
As a chamber musician, she has explored a wide spectrum of programs that showcased single composers, such as Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, as well as 20th century works from Britten, Legeti and Saariaho.
Farney earned a master of Music degree at the Eastman School of Music and a doctorate of Musical Arts at the Juilliard School.
Her accompanist, Huang, enjoys an active career as a performer and teacher. He has presented concerts throughout the United States as well as in England, France, China and South Korea and has been a soloist with the New World Symphony Orchestra and Elgin Symphony Orchestra. Huang serves on the adjunct faculties of the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, Concordia University-Chicago and the Merit School of Music.
