Distinguished Teaching Professor Raymond Angelo Belliotti, an author of scholarly books that explore religion as well as sports, will present a lecture, “Jesus vs. Nietzsche: Baseball vs. Football,” on Monday, Oct. 16, at 6 p.m., in the Science Center’s Kelly Family Auditorium (Room 105).

Dr. Belliotti’s “baseball vs. football” theme is purloined from the classic comedy bit by the late George Carlin, in which Nietzsche is the exemplar of football, and Jesus of baseball. Belliotti will contrast German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s will to power with Jesus’ call for forgiveness, while also drawing surprising similarities between the two thinkers.

“My objective, as always, is to stimulate thinking about both figures and to suggest how and in what ways they were radicals given the respective historical contexts within which their thinking emerged,” Belliotti explained.

His talk, part of the Department of Philosophy’s speaker series, is free and open to the public.
