Hannah Shea, a junior Animation and Illustration major from Freeville, will be 16 artists featured in the Southern Tier Biennial, a juried art competition that opens Sept. 19 and continues through Oct. 23 at the Olean Public Library and the Center Gallery, located at the Jamestown Community College campus in Olean.

Opening receptions for the show will be held 3 and 4:30 p.m., respectively, at the Olean library and JCC gallery, and are free and open to the public.
Shea’s entry, “Sparring Eucharitid Wasps,” was created in the course, Introduction to Illustration, taught by Associate Professor Jill Johnston during the spring semester. “Attaining realism in my art has been a major focus throughout my life. I strive to render something as true to life while maintaining a sense of my own style in each piece I create,” Shea explained in her artist’s statement.
Also chosen accepted for the competition were works by Johnston, who created the HD animation video “Don’t Be Afraid of Bears,” and Associate Professor Phil Hastings, also of Fredonia’s Department of Visual Arts and New Media, who created two digital prints, “Salacia vitreapirata” and “Pennulia forameniacaudae.”
The Southern Tier Biennial is produced by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council with assistance from the Olean Public Library, Jamestown Community College and the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation, and an endowment from the estate of F. Donald Kenney.
More than 160 works of art by 61 artists were evaluated by two jurors, John Massier, visual arts curator at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Buffalo, and Bleu Cease, executive director/curator of Rochester Contemporary Art Center, Rochester, N.Y.
