The Student Health Center has joined Alana's Foundation to get the word out about the importance of flu vaccinations. The challenge is to see how many members of the campus (students, faculty and staff) respond to a flu vaccination survey.
“While we participate in this challenge, we would also like to encourage all members of the campus community to get their flu shot,” said Deborah Dibble, director of the Student Health Center. Although the Student Health Center has gone through its supply of seasonal flu vaccine for this season, students, faculty and staff are still able to get the flu shot at any of the local pharmacies. The flu shot is covered by of the major health insurance carriers.
The survey is comprised of five general questions relating to flu vaccinations and can be completed in less than one minute. It can be accessed on the bar code that appears on Alana N. Yaksich College/University National Flue Vax Challenge posters mounted in high traffic areas on campus, and also online. Survey responses can be submitted until Dec. 4.
Fredonia is one of 19 colleges and universities participating in the national challenge, with Ulster County Community College as the only other SUNY school participating in the effort. One school in each enrollment classification (small, medium and large) with the greatest number of surveys completed will receive the Alana Yaksich Memorial Trophy.
Alana’s Foundation, named after a 5-1/2-year-old girl who died of flu-related complications, was created to educate the public about the importance of yearly influenza vaccinations.
