Tatianna Baker, who has worked with young children at the Campus and Community Children’s Center, helped lead cheers at pep rallies and raised money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, has received Fredonia’s “Student of the Month” award for April.
She’s also excelled in academics, ranking in the top 15 percent of the junior class with a 3.85 GPA.
Baker, of Perry, is majoring in Communication Disorders and Sciences. Her academic success has been recognized in receiving the Ann James Manley Scholarship and Fredonia Scholar Award, and with membership in Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and Golden Key International Honour Society, which she served as co-president.
As an intern at the Campus and Community Children’s Center for two semesters, Baker assisted the childcare specialist in the toddler room and provided general maintenance of the childcare area, monitored children during play time, and created and distributed handouts on child language development in the classroom.
Baker also assisted in early intervention classrooms that serve developmentally disabled children. Among her many duties were serving children with autism, speech disorders, hearing difficulties and other disabilities/delays, relaying to parents the progress and difficulties observed in their children, and providing support in parent/child classes.
She is a member of the Student Health Advisory Committee and participated in the annual stroke walk that increases community awareness of strokes.
Baker has gained valuable leadership and team-building experience as a member of Fredonia’s NCAA Division III Cheerleading team and a volunteer with Relay for Life, which raises money for cancer research; at Up ‘Till Dawn, which benefits St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and Fall Sweep, where she helped rake leaves for community members in Fredonia.
