Gerald Mead, an award-winning artist and leading figure in the Buffalo art world, will present his recent work as part of the Department of Visual Arts and New Media’s Visiting Artist Program on Thursday, Nov. 5, 8:30 p.m., at 209 McEwen Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus.

A mixed media artist, Mead is renowned for photographic-based miniature collages and assemblages that utilize found objects and a wide range of photographic materials. His works have been placed in museums and galleries throughout the United States and Europe.

His design concentration at Buffalo State College, where he earned bachelor’s degrees in psychology and design, was textiles. He began to merge photographs into the textiles, and eventually the photographic collage component became the dominant feature. Mead holds a master’s degree in Visual Studies from the University of Buffalo as well.

A former curator of Buffalo State College’s Burchfield-Penney Art Center, where he organized more than 100 exhibits, Mead continues to teach at the college in addition to conducting workshops at such places as Houghton College and Chautauqua Institution.

He has also received grants and awards from several organizations, including the New York Foundation for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts.
