University Statement
At the State University of New York at Fredonia, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment that values the expression and exchange of diverse opinions. As a public university, we firmly uphold the principle that all members of our campus community, as well as their invited guests, have the right to peacefully voice their views and opinions, regardless of any potential disagreement from others.
This extends to protesters who may oppose the viewpoints or opinions being expressed, as long as their actions do not impede the freedom of expression or interfere with the university's functioning. In accordance with the First Amendment, we maintain viewpoint neutrality when granting permission for student groups or recognized organizations to invite speakers to our campus, even if their perspectives or speech content diverge from SUNY Fredonia’s values of diversity, inclusion, and mutual respect.
As a State University of New York institution, SUNY Fredonia is also obligated to permit unaffiliated individuals or groups to hold demonstrations or protests in designated outdoor spaces on campus, as long as these activities do not disrupt regular operations. To ensure a harmonious and lawful environment, the university mandates that all groups using campus spaces adhere to our guidelines and comply with state laws regarding the organization and management of public events.
