Summer 2009--Men’s Basketball: Seven of the team’s first eight games are on the road, including tournaments at Old Westbury (Nov. 20-21) and Rochester Institute of Technology (Dec. 12-13). The lone home game this fall: Dec. 4 vs. Buffalo State.
Women’s Basketball: The team has six fall semester games, including Dec. 4 at home against Buffalo State. The season opens Nov. 17 at Nazareth.
Cross Country: The annual Fredonia State Invitational is Sept. 19 at Lake Erie State Park. SUNYAC Championships are Oct. 31 at Cortland.
Ice Hockey: The team hosts two SUNYAC home weekends in the fall: Oct. 30-31 vs. Cortland and Oswego, and Nov. 20-21 vs. Potsdam and Plattsburgh. The season opens Oct. 23 at Lebanon Valley.
Men’s Soccer: The team faces defending D-III national champ Messiah Sept. 5 on the road. Home matches include the Clarion Hotel Soccer Classic (Sept. 11-12), Nazareth (Sept. 15), Oneonta (Sept. 25), New Paltz (Sept. 26), Westminster (Sept. 30), Cortland (Oct. 9) and Oswego (Oct. 10).
Women’s Soccer: Two tournaments: Sept. 4 and 6 at the University of Rochester, and Sept. 11-12 at home vs. St. Lawrence and Penn St. Behrend in the Clarion Hotel Soccer Classic. Other home games include Buffalo State (Sept. 19), Potsdam (Oct. 16), Plattsburgh (Oct. 17), Brockport (Oct. 23) and Geneseo (Oct. 24).
Swimming and Diving: Among eight home meets (six during the fall semester) is the Blue Devil Invitational, Dec. 4-6.
Women’s Tennis: A new format this fall pits the Blue Devils against four SUNYAC opponents over three days (Sept. 11-13) in Binghamton and Syracuse. The season opens at home vs. Geneseo (Sept. 5).
Indoor Track and Field: The Golden Flash Gala at Kent State again opens the season Dec. 4-5.
Women’s Volleyball: The defending SUNYAC champs begin Sept. 4 against Skidmore and Rochester in the Cortland Red Dragon Classic (Sept. 4-5). Fredonia’s first home match is Sept. 8 vs. D’Youville. The team hosts the Blue Devil Invitational (Oct. 2-3) and West Division Pool Play (Oct. 23-24). Fredonia also plays weekend tournaments at Nazareth College (Sept. 11-12), Rochester Institute of Technology (Sept. 18-19) and Vassar College (Oct. 30-31).
Results from Spring 2009:
Baseball (8-4 SUNYAC; 26-12 overall): The Blue Devils set a school record for victories in a season and played in two post-season tournaments. They were a SUNYAC Tournament entrant for the first time since 1991. They also hosted the ECAC Upstate Tournament and finished with a 26-12 mark. Senior outfielder Jordan Basile (Jamestown) set Blue Devil records with 63 hits, 47 runs and 20 stolen bases. He also set career records with 158 hits and 106 runs. In addition to Basile, post-season awards went to senior left-hander Ricky Carlson (Frewsburg), sophomore second baseman Josh Greco (Lockport), sophomore first baseman Taylor Gahagen (Amherst) and senior outfielder Jeremy Borst (Clarendon, Pa.).
Lacrosse (4-5 SUNYAC; 10-7 overall): Freshman attacker Amy Simon (Amherst) set single-season school records for points (63) and goals (54). Also, junior midfielder Katie Monaghan (Fairport) became the university’s all-time leader in career assists with 46. Sophomore attacker Laura Culhane (Rochester) had 21 assists during the season, tying the school record. Simon, freshman midfielder Morgan McNamara (Oswego), and freshman defender Megan Mietelski (Fairport) were selected to the All-SUNYAC Team.
Softball (6-14 SUNYAC; 15-20-1 overall): Freshman right-hander Ashley LaPorta (Buffalo) threw a no-hitter against Massachusetts-Dartmouth on March 17 at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. During a double-header that same day, fellow freshman right-hander Jennifer Tighe (Hamburg) defeated Richard Stockton, one of her team-high six victories.
Track and Field (for full results, see www.fredonia.edu/athletics ): Five Blue Devils were selected to the 2009 Outdoor Track and Field All-SUNYAC team. Julia Hopson was also chosen Women’s Field Athlete of both the outdoor and indoor seasons. Other outdoor All-SUNYACs: sophomore David “Mac” McMahill (Hemlock), after winning the men’s 800 meters just ahead of sophomore Nick Guarino (Bergen). McMahill made the First Team, Guarino the Second. Junior Jackie Majka (Depew) finished second in the women’s high jump; and sophomore Mike Hite (Hamburg) took second-place in the men’s javelin. Majka and Hite were Second Team selections.
