The SUNY Fredonia campus and community are celebrating 350 reasons to protect Earth all day Sunday, Oct. 17, with several activities organized by student and local groups. The "350 Day" festivities are part of a worldwide campaign to raise awareness of sound environmental practices.
In Fredonia, a display of 350 species of living things that inhabit Chautauqua County will be found at the Barker Commons gazebo from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Starting at noon and at 2 p.m., Bug Walks will be led along Canadaway Creek. Additionally, eco-art demonstrations will take place in Barker Commons to explore ways to recycle "trash" into "treasures."
The worldwide 350 Day of Action was created by environmentalist Bill McKibben to emphasize the need to reduce humankind's carbon footprint
The day is named after the fact that scientists have determined that, in order to maintain ecological homeostasis on Earth, the safe level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is 350 parts per million.
Currently, Earth's atmosphere exceeds this quota at 390 parts per million.
