The scores were not nearly as important as the camaraderie at the 8th Annual Fredonia Alumni Golf Tournament held Friday, July 15, at Shorewood Country Club in Dunkirk.
Approximately 100 Fredonia alumni and friends joined employees of Fredonia’s Division of University Advancement and the Fredonia College Foundation to raise money to help current and future Fredonia students reach their goals.
"The tournament is just a great event,” said Richard Ryan, ’04, development associate and tournament co-chair. “We've had alumni participate from all over the country, from the Class of 1950 all the way to currently enrolled students.”
The day, which included golf, dinner, raffle prizes, and more, was kicked off by honorary starter Dr. David Herman. Dr. Herman retired last month from his position as Vice President for Student Affairs. He spent 15 years at Fredonia and 47 years in higher education. Clif Wheeler of the University Police joined Ryan as tournament co-chair.
The tournament has raised over $90,000 for various Fredonia scholarships. Those gifts include the University Police Scholarship in Criminal Justice, the Foundation Academic Scholarship and Alumni Association scholarships.
“We also get a lot of support from our local and regional partners. It's a complete effort that makes serious impact on scholarships for students,” said Ryan. “Each year I am overwhelmed by the results. I can't wait until next year when we take it over $100,000!"
Major tournament sponsors included the Buffalo Bills, Liberty Mutual Insurance, Tyco, West Herr Automotive Group, DFT Communications, Lake Shore Savings, the Lipsitz Green Scime Cambria law firm and Chautauqua County District Attorney Patrick Swanson.
