Student teams will convene to compete for the coveted Pi Cup at the Department of Mathematical Sciences’ SMADness World Championship.
The Pi Day 2025 celebration, to be observed this year on Wednesday, March 12, in Houghton Hall Room 237, represents a milestone anniversary – 25 consecutive years of robust mathematics competition at SUNY Fredonia.
Teams will tackle the game of SMADness that requires them to create number sentences that replicate the digits of pi – 314.
Not sure how to play?
“No worries. We’ll teach you and no experience is required,” said Department of Mathematical Sciences Professor Keary Howard. Students in all academic disciplines are welcome. “Dress the part and be ready to tell the world why your SMADness team is the greatest of all time.”
Adds Dr. Howard, “Be sure to join us for music, dancing, math and more.” Home baked pies and snacks will be served in the department’s Fishbowl (Room 264).
Space is limited, so teams are asked to register here by Monday, March 10. Registration flyers that include a registration QR code will also be available throughout Houghton Hall.
Pi Day – traditionally observed on March 14 – will be strategically celebrated two days early at SUNY Fredonia to avoid a conflict with the approaching spring break.
