School of Business faculty introduced an innovative sustainability exercise published in the Business Education Innovation Journal.

In the paper, “Integrating Sustainability into Supplier Management: A Classroom Exercise for SMEs Using the Kraljic Matrix and Sustainability Measurement Tool,” Associate Professor Lisa Walters and Assistant Professor So-Jin Yu present a classroom exercise that equips students with skills in sustainable supplier management.

The exercise uses the Kraljic Matrix alongside a Sustainability Measurement Tool (SEM), developed by Dr. Walters during a sabbatical, that challenging students to balance financial, environmental and social factors in supplier evaluation.

Conducted as a two-day classroom event, the exercise engages students in hands-on analysis of supply chain metrics and sustainability. As a result, the exercise helps future business leaders understand how SMEs can consider supplier management beyond typical considerations. This approach enhances student comprehension of supply chain dynamics within the context of sustainability.
