The Fredonia State softball team picked up their first SUNYAC win of the season with a 5-1 win over Brockport in game one of their doubleheader. In game two, the Devils fell to Brockport 4-6.
Game 1
The Devils got to work early with lead off hitter Allie Wandell singling at the bottom of the first. Wandell would score for Fredonia off a Alyssa Santiago double to take an early 1-0 lead. Riley Barrett for Brockport singled at the top of the third and would score after Kellie Gentile flew out to left field to tie the game at one.
Fredonia State's Victoria Pauwels singled in the fourth and after a Wandell triple next at bat, the Devils recaptured the lead. Wandell would score off a Mac Miller sac fly to bring the score to 3-1. The Devils would finish the game scoring a run in the fifth and sixth inning to close out the game.
Wandell would finish the game going 3-4, 3 runs, 1 RBI. Santiago would go 2-4 with 1 run and 1 RBI with Pauwels going 1-2 and one run. Pitcher Emily Chelius had 9 strike outs in the victory. Gentile for Brockport would finish hitting 1-3 with one RBI.
Game 2
Both teams would try to find a rhythm early with aggressive base running as players from both sides would steal second base and go on to score off a single in the top and bottom of the first. Despite Fredonia finishing the game with six more hits than their opponent, Brockport would capitalize on series of errors from the Devils at the top of the third to go up 3-1.
Fredonia State would capture their first lead of the game during the bottom of the fifth with a Emily Chelius single and after two wild pitches would advance to third base. Megan Guidry would ground out to second bringing in Chelius.
Brockport would tie the game back up at four and going into the seventh inning would score off of a fielder's choice and would score again off a wild pitch to put the game out of reach.
Wandell would lead the Devils going 2-3 with 2 runs and 1 RBI with both a Santiago and Guidry going 1-4 with a RBI a each.
The Devils now move to 2-18 on the season and 1-5 in the SUNYAC. Fredonia State will next play a doubleheader at St. John Fisher Tuesday, April 18 with game one starting at 3 p.m.
