The SUNY Fredonia women's volleyball team picked up a 3-2 victory over a strong Morrisville State squad on Saturday.
The Devils improved their SUNYAC Tournament berth chances, moving to 3-4 with two matches left to play. Morrisville entered the day in second place in the conference, with only one SUNYAC loss. They now stand at 6-2.
Senior Eric Callahan led the offense with 16 kills, while Kylie O'Brien and Maeve Musielak had 14 apiece. Oliva Boswell chipped in three aces, and Molly Cassidy had 22 assists.
Defensively, Callahan had two blocks, and Sasha Zayatz had 13 digs.
In the first set, the Devils scored the first four points and dominated the action, winning 25-12.
Morrisville flipped the switch, taking the second set 25-19. Leading 17-15, the Mustangs scored five straight to take command of the set.
The see-saw battle tilted back in the favor of Fredonia State in the third set. They jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but Morrisville would tie things at 8 apiece. Tied 19-all late in the set, the Devils scored six of the last seven points, capped by an ace from Cassidy to claim a 25-20 lead, and put themselves up two sets to one.
The fourth set was close throughout, with Morrisville etching out a 25-21 win, tying things at two sets apiece.
The fifth set did not start well for the Devils, who found themselves trailing 5-0 early on. With Morrisville up 9-5, the Devils would score five straight to take their first lead of the set, 10-9. Tied at 10, the Devils would score five of the las eight points, punctuated by a kill by Maeve Musielak, to claim the win.
The Devils improve to 10-15 overall and travel to Canton and Oswego next weekend to wrap up SUNYAC play.
