Fredonia staff, faculty and emeriti will join forces to raise money to benefit local food pantries by hosting Empty Bowls on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Wheelock Primary School, 75 Chestnut St., Fredonia.
Nearly 2,000 ceramic bowls have been made by local potters, including Fredonia employees who have donated their time, materials and skills. Bowls of varying sizes will be available for donations of $10 to $30.
After selecting a bowl and making a donation, guests will be able to have their bowls filled with soup prepared by Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) culinary arts students. School of Music guitar instructor and retired campus printer Thomas Gestwicki will coordinate music performed by School of Music students and local musicians.
Members of the Fredonia Health Professions Club will assist with serving duties. All soup ingredients have been donated by Tuscany Fresh Meats and Deli, Fredonia.
The fundraiser is organized by SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus Marvin Bjurlin and Fredonia graduate Ron Nasca, who operates Mudslingers Pottery Studio in Fredonia. Drs. David Rudge and Ted Lee, both faculty members, and Ann Burns, retired chief of University Police, are among local potters who have created bowls for the event.
All proceeds will be used to help feed the hungry.
