Films produced by faculty and students at Fredonia, including the documentary “Among the Hemlocks: Fantastic Stories from Fredonia, NY,” will be screened at the Niagara Falls International Film Festival.
“Among the Hemlocks,” produced and directed by Department of Communication Assistant Professor Roslin Smith, and two student films, “Aberration” and “A Serious Score,” will be screened on Friday, Sept. 20. Opening night of the festival is Wednesday, Sept. 18. Screenings of domestic and international films will be held through Saturday, Sept. 21, at the state-of-the-art Regal Cinemas Niagara Falls 12, 720 Builders Way, Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Smith’s documentary, which involved over 84 students, faculty and community members, explores the history of Fredonia and includes the founding of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union in the 1870s. It has been shown locally and internationally since its 2018 release.
“Aberration” tells the story of a female, who had been held captive for several years by a sexual predator, coming to the realization that the emotional trauma she experienced never goes away. It was directed by E. Peter Maziarz and produced by Haley Jordyn Poth. The cast includes Gabrielle Nunzio, Natalie DeBoer and Patrick Dougherty. It will be screened between 8 and 10 p.m. More information about the film is available online.
The story line of “A Serious Score” portrays two brothers, desperate for some quick cash, who rob a house not knowing who they’re robbing. It presents the dilemma: could the pain be worth the crime? It was directed by Ms. Poth and produced by Andrew Nagoda. The cast includes Kevin Ganzekaufer, Cameron Forster and Noah McMullin.
“Serious Score” will be screened, along with four other films, between 2 to 4 p.m.
Both student films, produced by Narrative Fiction capstone students as well as theatre students, and “Among the Hemlocks” have been entered in the festival’s short film category.
