Participants in the conference (from left) Dr. Andrew Seigel, Erin Carpenter, Jamie Leigh Sampson and Dr. Andrew Martin Smith.
Fredonia School of Music faculty members and graduate student Erin Carpenter will be included at the International Clarinet Association's New Music Weekend on Oct. 22 and 23.
Associate Professor of Clarinet Andrew Seigel will present Adjunct Lecturer Andrew Martin Smith's "Fragments" for demi-clarinet. The demi-clarinet is a modified clarinet, where the mouthpiece is attached to only the bottom half of the instrument, resulting in a unique timbre and vastly altered scale of notes.
Adjunct Lecturer Jamie Leigh Sampson's work "Unequal Measure" will be performed by the Arizona-based Paradise Winds reed quintet (oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bass clarinet and bassoon).
Ms. Carpenter, a graduate clarinet student of staff accompanist I-Fei Chen, will present Hungarian composer/conductor Gergely Vajda's "Lightshadows, Trembling." Carpenter, from Eden, earned a Mus.B. in Music Performance in clarinet from SUNY Fredonia in 2020.
The performances will be presented via the ICA's YouTube channel; Seigel/Smith on Saturday at 3 p.m.; Carpenter on Sunday at 3 p.m., and Sampson, also on Sunday, at 4 p.m.
ICA New Music Weekend 2022 is a two-day virtual festival featuring new music performances, extended technique clinics, composer/performer collaborative master classes and interactive workshops. The event is free and open to anyone who loves clarinet and wants to spend some quality time with other new music advocates.
