On the day of the final game for four seniors, freshman sensation Gabby Irwin came through with the game's only goal as the Fredonia State women's soccer team battled New Paltz to a 1-0 victory on Sunday. The Devils took down the No. 2 seed in and delivered the Hawls (4-1-3) their only loss in SUNYAC play.
Irwin beat New Paltz goalie Maddie Franklin in a scramble in front of the net in the 33d minute. It was her fourth goal of the year. She was assisted by Hannah Retzer.
Freshman Abby Szymkowiak played admirably in goal with eight saves for the Devils. Her biggest save came in the closing seconds. New Paltz had an opportunity from about 10 feet out, bur Szymkowiak stuffed the shot to preserve the goose egg -- her first solo shutout of the season.
Franklin had three saves for the Hawks.
The Hawks out shot the Devils, 14-5, but it was not indicative of the action. Both teams pushed the pace at different times. The Devils back defensive line also played outstanding defensively.
