Though many weeks in the spring semester remain, Tutoring Services, which provides free tutoring in most subject areas, is accepting applications from students who would like to join its staff in the 2021-2022 academic year.
“Working as a tutor can be an extremely rewarding experience. Our tutors provide an important service to the students of this campus while developing skills and broadening their own understanding of their major,” said Adam Hino, Tutoring Services coordinator.
Serving as a tutor is an “absolutely incredible experience,” said Emilee Stenson, a senior Biology major. “Not only have I gained skills in teamwork, mentoring and public speaking, I've built great relationships with my coworkers and tutees. As a future physician, people skills and teaching are vital – and working as a tutor has certainly helped shape them,” Ms. Stenson explained.
Even when tutoring became virtual through Zoom, Stenson added, “we've been able to maintain the high-caliber tutoring we've always had. I've enjoyed my time tutoring, and I can't recommend the position enough!”
Tutors are paid to work a scheduled number of hours, usually two to four. They may also be assigned to work privately with students registered in the Full Opportunity Program, Educational Development Program or Office of Disability Support Services for Students.
“In addition to a paycheck, being a tutor looks great on a resume for students seeking admission to graduate programs or competing for jobs, fellowships and teaching positions,” Mr. Hino added.
Additional information about Tutoring Services is available online that includes the current tutoring schedule and employment application.
The deadline to apply is Friday, March 19, at 4 p.m. For more information, contact Hino at 716-673-3550 or via email.
