Dr. Matthew Purtill
Research results compiled by Department of Geology and Environmental Sciences Assistant Professor Matthew Purtill were highlighted in a column appearing in The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch, a major newspaper in central Ohio.
Dr. Purtill’s research is part of an article, "More than Just Clovis: The Broad Impact of Sampling Bias on Archaeological Site Distributions," that was published online in the Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory. The newspaper column, “Working with biased data to understand the past: archaeology,” was written by Brad Lepper, senior archaeologist for the Ohio History Connection’s World Heritage Program.
“The research explores how our knowledge of past societies and events is influenced by the completeness of the material record that archaeologists collect, a condition commonly referred to as sampling bias,” Purtill explained.
