School of Music Senior Lecturer Lynne McMurtry, contralto, and Alison d'Amato, guest pianist from the Eastman School of Music, will present a varied recital program that celebrates the rich history of art song while bringing it firmly into the contemporary moment on Sunday, Feb. 6, at 4 p.m., in Rosch Recital Hall.
"We begin with some of the cornerstone German composers of song, such as Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms, as well as their vibrant female contemporaries, such as Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel,” Ms. McMurtry said.
The second half will celebrate diverse voices of the 20th and 21st centuries. Women poets, Black American female composers, indigenous poets and LGTBQ poets, Asian and trans composers will be featured in a rich musical tapestry that is wonderfully accented with elements of jazz and contemporary harmony, culminating with a sly reworking of one of Joseph Haydn's most famous symphonies into an invective about pronouns.
A multiplicity of musical identities will come together for a singularly enjoyable performance that is free and open to the public.
