A student attending the 2021 Fredonia Piano Fellows program, to be held in conjunction with the Claudette Sorel Piano Competition at SUNY Fredonia, will be awarded the inaugural James Horbett Memorial Piano Fellow Scholarship.

The new scholarship, named in honor of a former music student who passed away in 2019, will be presented to a student who enrolls in the piano program in Fredonia’s School of Music. It was established by William Horbett, a 1973 Fredonia graduate, through the Fredonia College Foundation.

The Fellows program will be held Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 6 and 7, in conjunction with the Claudette Sorel Piano Competition on Sunday, Nov. 7. It is designed for talented pianists (ages 15 to 18) who are serious about their craft and are looking for an intensive musical experience, but who may not yet be ready for the competition circuit. It is also an excellent way to prepare for a college/conservatory audition.

There is no fee to participate in either the in-person or online Fellows program.

An individual lesson with School of Music faculty, afternoon workshops and master classes, a performance in a Fellows recital, a behind-the-scenes experience at the Sorel competition and invitation to join the ongoing online Fellows community will be offered to students enrolled in the in-person Fellows experience.

Online Fellows will attend afternoon workshops and master classes via Zoom, watch the Fellows Recital livestream and the Sorel competition livestream and be invited to be part of the online Fellows community.

The deadline to apply to the Piano Fellows program is Wednesday, Sept. 15. An application form and more information are available online.
