Dr. Christopher Hotaling
Dr. Christopher Hotaling, an adjunct instructor in the School of Music since 2022, has been appointed Lecturer of music (tuba-euphonium), effective in the fall semester.
"This competitive national search – attracting international applicants – clearly led us to appointing Dr. Christopher Hotaling to this role," said School of Music Dean Stringham. "Dr. Hotaling draws on rich and varied experiences in brass performance, music learning and teaching and voice performance; broad understanding of music's roles in individuals' lives; and demonstrated commitment to creative, flexible, and student-centered teaching. I am honored to have the opportunity to continue collaborating with Dr. Hotaling in his new role."
An active pedagogue, clinician and performer, Hotaling employs elements from his background in vocal performance in his approach to teaching and playing tuba and euphonium. He strongly believes in the importance of lyrical, song-like playing as a means of promoting growth in students, and enjoys incorporating vocal repertoire in lessons and performances.
As an adjunct instructor, Hotaling taught weekly lessons to all tuba majors, directed the Fredonia Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble and taught courses related to low brass teaching and pedagogy.
Hotaling has recently performed with the Erie Philharmonic, Orchestra of Northern New York and Northern Symphonic Winds. He was also a guest lecturer and solo artist at the 2024 Midwest Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference.
Hotaling has a D.M.A. and a M.M., both from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, where he was also awarded the prestigious Performer’s Certificate, and a B.M. in Euphonium Performance and Music Education from The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, where he was named a Presser Scholar. His primary teachers include Mark Kellogg, of the Eastman School, and Drs. Lonel Woods and Charles Guy of SUNY Potsdam.
