The Fredonia State women's soccer team will take on the New Paltz Hawks in the second round of the SUNYAC Tournament today.
The No. 4 seed Blue Devils (12-7-0 / 5-4-0 SUNYAC) advanced to the semi-final game by virtue of a dominating 2-0 win over Buffalo State on Saturday. New Paltz, the regular season champions, received a bye and earned the home game.
The Devils, whose 12 wins tied the school record, are led by Katie Sellers with 13 goals and two assists, and Gabby Irwin with nine goals and eight assists. Other offensive threats include Maddie Payne who led the team with nine assists, and Bronwyn Madden who collected six goals. The Blue Devils are second in the SUNYAC in goals scored with 46. New Paltz leads the conference with 52 goals.
Fredonia State goaltender Abby Szymkowiak had a brilliant game vs. Buffalo State. Despite making only four saves, she made several spectacular stops en route to her eighth shutout of the year. She has played every minute in goal for Fredonia State. The Blue Devils' defense sports a goals-against average of 1.05.
New Paltz (13-2-2 / 8-0-1 SUNYAC) won the earlier matchup, 2-0, at New Paltz on Oct. 5. Alyssa Deutsch and Rachel Eisert both scored for the Hawks. Szymkowiak had made a career-high 13 saves in that contest.
Eisert was SUNYAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2023, and leads the team with 14 goals. Gaby Trebele has 13 goals, and Brooke Kelleher leads the team with seven assists while also netting four goals.
Goaltender Maddie Franklin has a .31 goals against average and has recorded 13 shutouts.
Gametime is slated for 1 p.m. in New Paltz.
