Senior Adjunct Lecturer Andrew Martin Smith of the School of Music has been named the new general manager of the Society of Composers, Inc. (SCI).

An active member of SCI since he was a student, Dr. Smith becomes one of the few people to have held the general manager position since the organization’s founding in 1965. SCI is an international professional society dedicated to the promotion, performance, understanding and dissemination of contemporary music.

Members include music creators from a variety of backgrounds, and, as an organization, these creative musicians address the concerns of contemporary composers on global, national and regional levels. SCI hosts conferences, produces an annual juried CD series and publishes the peer-reviewed Journal of Music Scores, featuring works created by the membership.

Carter John Rice, associate chair of the SCI Executive Committee, said, “I truly cannot think of a better person than Andrew for this task. (He) has worked on both the Executive Committee and the National Council, and has been a passionate advocate for SCI the entire time I’ve known him.”

At the beginning of his tenure as general manager, Smith states, “I am looking forward to contributing to the continued development of this vibrant organization as we move into the third decade of the 21st century. As with all organizations dedicated to contemporary artistry, our advocacy in the here and now should reflect on our history while opening a world of possibilities for composers creating the music of today; this is important work that I am grateful to be a part of.”

Smith, who received a Mus.B. in Music Composition and Clarinet Performance at Fredonia, has an M.M. in Composition and a D.M.A. in Contemporary Music, both from Bowling Green State University.
