CLERMONT, Fla. -- Fredonia State finished the Florida portion of its schedule with two wins and a loss Friday at The Spring Games. The Blue Devils (3-11) defeated Wooster 10-3 and St. Scholastica 10-2 in six innings at the Sleepy Hollow Complex in Leesburg, Fla. Their long day ended with a 9-1 six-inning loss to Carthage at Hancock Park in Clermont.
The 10-3 win over Wooster went to Emily Chelius, who worked into the fifth before Erin Cunningham pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless, hitless relief. Offensively, Megan Guidry had two doubles and three RBI, Nicole Kumro had two singles and two RBI, Evelyn Webster two singles and one RBI, and Alyssa Piniewski walked twice, singled, and scored two runs.
Vanessa Galbraith pitched a complete-game four-hitter and earned her first win in a 10-2 win over St. Scholastica. Alyssa Santiago's bases-loaded triple highlighted a five-run fourth inning which saw the Blue Devils erase a 2-1 deficit. Amber Piniewski followed with an RBI double, one of her three hits. Alyssa Piniewski added two singles and Santiago had a single to go along with her triple. She reached base all three times she batted as did Webster, who walked twice and was hit by a pitch during the decisive five-run fourth.
After a trip south back to Clermont, the Blue Devils jumped to a 1-0 in the first inning on singles by Guidry and Amber Piniewski and a sacrifice fly by Kumro which was dropped by the Carthage left-fielder. That was the only scoring by the Blue Devils, who managed just four hits. Chelius started and took the pitching loss.
The Blue Devils now have two weeks to prepare for the start of SUNYAC competition. They are scheduled to take on Oswego on April 1 and Cortland on April 2 at Blue Devil Field on the Fredonia State campus. Both dates are doubleheaders.
