Department of English Associate Professor Ici Vanwesenbeeck was invited to speak at the workshop “Imperial Lives Turned National: Biographical Reflections on the Post-Ottoman Transformation a Century Ago,” organized by the Orient-Institut, Istanbul and the Oriental Institute, Czech Academy of Sciences, at the Orient-Institut, in Istanbul, on May 22 and 23.

Dr. Vanwesenbeeck’s talk at the workshop, “From Empire to Nation: Halide Edip and Music,” will be featured in article form, under a different title, “Between Old and New Turkey: Halide Edip and Opera,” in the special issue “Imperial Lives Turned National,” by Archiv Orientalni, that the institute is publishing together with the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, in December.

Orient-Institut Istanbul (OII) is a turcological and area studies research institute of the Max Weber Foundation--Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute im Ausland, which is financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

In close cooperation with Turkish, German and international scholars, the Orient-Institut, Istanbul conducts studies in various research areas. These include Ottoman studies, Turkic languages and literatures, history of religions, musicology and sociology of medicine. The institute has a publicly accessible research library comprising about 50,000 volumes and 1,500 journals focusing on Ottoman studies, Turcology, and Contemporary Studies.
