Two separate wellness workshops – one for faculty about how to manage burnout and another for students about staying joyful while studying or teaching what they love – will be presented at SUNY Fredonia by Dr. Merideth Hite Estevez, an oboist, creativity coach, podcaster and recently published author of “The Artist’s Joy.”
Dr. Estevez is also the featured guest artist for Oboe Day at SUNY Fredonia.
The faculty burnout workshop is designed to help faculty recover from burnout by examining expectations, setting boundaries and finding rest. It has been noted that creative expression is a powerful tool for healing and preventing burnout. In the workshop, Dr. Estevez, who through her organization Artists for Joy coaches artists worldwide and creates the award-winning podcast of the same name, will invite attendees to “become more resilient to stress as they learn to rest, play and wonder creatively.” The workshop will be held in Mason Hall Room 2140 on Friday, Oct. 27, at 3 p.m.
Academic training can be intense for students, so attempting to “do it all” can result in burnout, leaving a student feeling creatively zapped. In the interactive student workshop devoted to staying joyful when studying or teaching, Estevez will invite attendees to name and claim their creative impulse. The workshop will be held in Mason Hall Room 1080 on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 4 p.m.
Both workshops are free and open to faculty, staff and students as well as community members. There is no pre-registration.
